We’re with you every step of the way

How an ADHD assessment works

To provide the most appropriate support, our specialist team needs to understand your own or your child's unique neurodevelopmental profile. Our experienced clinicians conduct thorough assessments to determine if and to what extent ADHD is playing a role.

step 1

Screening

Our psychology team, led by consultant clinical psychologists based in Kent, provides a screening process to give initial insights as to whether you or your loved one might have ADHD. If the results indicate ADHD may be present, we'll recommend moving forward with a diagnostic assessment.

step 2

Information Gathering

We gather information from multiple perspectives to understand how ADHD symptoms present across different environments. For adults, before we arrange your assessment, we also ask for insights from someone who has known you since childhood because neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD are with us from birth. For children and adolescents, we collect observations from school, and in some cases from other settings, where attention, activity levels, and impulse control are important. This comprehensive view helps our clinical team better understand the impact of potential ADHD symptoms in various aspects of life.

step 3

Assessment

Our ADHD diagnostic assessment is carried out by experts in identifying ADHD across different age groups. For children, either a clinical psychologist, consultant paediatrician, or consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist conducts the assessment. Where needed, we triage referrals to determine the most appropriate specialist. During the assessment, the clinician explores your child's strengths, needs, and developmental history, while observing their behaviour and mannerisms. For adults, a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist conducts a thorough clinical interview using the DIVA-2 assessment tool.

This covers how your traits impact your daily life, work, relationships, and childhood experiences. For all assessments, our specialists combine all information gathered from the screening, questionnaires, and the clinical interview, evaluating it against DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. We present the outcome after the assessment, along with specific recommendations for support, adjustments, and treatment options where appropriate.

step 4

Diagnostic Report

Our team provides a clear, detailed report outlining the ADHD assessment findings and recommendations. The report provides a thorough foundation for accessing appropriate support and understanding how ADHD affects daily functioning across different environments. Since our assessments are compliant with NICE guidelines, our diagnostic reports and recommended outcomes are fully accepted by both the NHS and schools/colleges. This ensures you can access appropriate support services and accommodations where needed.

step 5

Support

If the assessment indicates ADHD, we'll discuss with you all appropriate support options for you or your child. This includes a range of possibilities such as medication, psychological support, and behavioural strategies. Together, we'll help identify the most suitable approach. If medication is chosen, a specialist prescriber will assess suitability through routine tests before starting any treatment plan. Regular review appointments monitor the medication's effectiveness and any side effects. Once treatment is stable and working well, we arrange a referral to your local NHS ADHD service or GP for ongoing prescription management and monitoring.

Understanding  ADHD

Cherishing unique minds

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how children and adults process attention, activity, and impulse control. For adults, this can impact work performance, relationships, and daily organisation. For children, it can affect learning, social interactions, and behaviour at school and home. When ADHD is identified through professional diagnostic assessment, individuals can access appropriate support and strategies.

For adults, this might include workplace adjustments and tools for managing time and organisation. For children, we can provide guidance for both home and school environments. Our private ADHD assessment helps you to understand your or your child's unique way of thinking and experiencing the world. With professional guidance and support, people with ADHD can move forward with confidence, building on their strengths while developing effective strategies for areas of difficulty.

Some words from our patients

We've helped thousands of patients over the years, and here are some of their thoughts.

I was made to feel at ease straight away

The doctor was very patient and understanding and I was treated with the utmost respect. I came away feeling well informed and I have a plan moving forward for my condition.

Fantastic clinic. I would highly recommend.

I chose to go here to get diagnosed privately. Sadly I have been let down by the NHS since my childhood in the 1980’s and I decided I had to go private, but I would say it was worth every penny and the long drive from my home. Lovely professional staff. Thank you.

Thank you once again for all of your help Psicon!

An outstanding company. Are always willing to help on the phone with any questions, concerns or problems. I would recommend them to anyone.

Quick efficient service.

I could not have been happier with timescales, responses and communication.

The centre is a lovely welcoming place and the professionals put my highly anxious son at ease.

We went to the children's centre to get my son aged 17, a private assessment. From the start the staff were informative and helpful. The centre is a lovely welcoming place and the professionals put my highly anxious son at ease. In fact he even asked when we were going back! After negative experiences with the NHS and school, my son felt that he could finally access support that was right for him. Thank you 😊

Would highly recommend Psicon for any assessments

Excellent communication and explanation throughout the assessments.

From the minute we arrived staff were welcoming and professional. Thank you for listening and helping my son to be as comfortable as possible. You were so attentive to his ways and the consultant, speech and language therapist had extensive knowledge and were able to pick up on things I wasn’t even aware of. The support throughout was amazing, everything was explained in detail and I would definitely recommend Psicon to others. Thank you again.

All practitioners were friendly, understanding and really knowledgeable

Frequently Asked Questions

Want to know more about how we can help?

Everyone’s mind is unique. Many of us are neurodiverse. And while the neurological differences that make us individuals can bring challenges, we believe that with understanding, empathy and expert support, everyone can thrive.

See all our FAQs

I don’t have anyone to help with the pre-assessment questionnaires, will this affect my assessment? (For adults)

We typically request input from someone who has known you since your early years to provide supplementary information during the assessment process, helping us understand your developmental history. The Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5) specifies that ADHD symptoms must have been present in childhood for a diagnosis to be made. However, we recognise that some people may not have access to someone who can provide this historical context. While having this additional perspective is valuable, its absence won't prevent the ADHD assessment from proceeding. In such situations, we encourage you to share relevant historical documentation that might provide insights into your earlier experiences - such as academic records or previous assessments.

What happens if the report indicates that ADHD is not present?

Having conducted thousands of ADHD diagnostic assessments, we understand the condition manifests uniquely in each individual. Our evaluation process is designed to identify various presentation styles and coping mechanisms – especially important when assessing females who often develop sophisticated strategies to manage their symptoms. If ADHD isn't diagnosed, our clinical team provides recommendations for appropriate support and can suggest alternative assessments if needed.

Will a private ADHD diagnosis be accepted by the NHS and (if relevant) my child’s school?

We maintain exceptional professional standards and ensure complete adherence to NICE guidelines across our ADHD assessment process. Our reputation as a dependable assessment provider has led to established partnerships with numerous NHS Trusts and ICBs, where we help manage assessment backlogs. Our diagnostic team features specialist psychiatrists and consultant clinical psychologists with extensive experience in ADHD evaluation - a level of expertise that distinguishes us from many other providers. Because of our comprehensive assessment methodology and stringent diagnostic criteria, our evaluations and reports are consistently accepted by the NHS and schools/colleges.

How long is the waiting list?

We aim to offer assessment appointments within four to six weeks of receiving all pre-assessment information. The timeline depends on how quickly we receive completed questionnaires from relevant parties (such as family members, schools, or other professionals who know you or your child well).
