Introduction
Cherishing unique minds
We’ve been providing adult mental health services since 1998, and over the years have supported more than 20,000 individuals experiencing mental health concerns.
Our Adult Mental Health Services team is made up of very experienced clinical psychologists and counselling psychologists, highly trained and able to deliver psychological support and evidence-based therapy for a range of mental health problems. We understand that it can be difficult to seek help, and taking the first steps is brave. Our environment is designed to be as comfortable and welcoming as possible and you will always be met with compassion and kindness.
If you decide to have therapy, our clinicians will put you at ease and guide you towards the best therapeutic solution for you.

How our mental wellbeing assessment works
Referral
You will be asked to complete a short referral form which will ask some questions about what difficulties you are facing, any concerns you may have as well as any relevant clinical or medical history. Our expert team will review this and ensure the most appropriate clinician is allocated to you.
Psychology assessment
A clinical or counselling psychologist will meet with you to discuss the difficulties you are facing and develop an understanding of those difficulties with you. Your psychologist will do their best to put you at your ease and create a positive, healthy atmosphere to talk in. We understand that people often come to us for support at the most difficult times and our psychologists are skilled at various forms of therapy. They are equally keen to make you feel safe, secure and understood without any judgment.
Formulation and feedback
We give detailed feedback on what we’ve discovered and, most importantly, how to understand it. This is one of the main differences between a psychologist and a counsellor. It can be immensely helpful to share this understanding with others close to you, so that we all approach things with consistency and have the same ideas in mind.
Comprehensive report with recommendations
If required, we can write a comprehensive report with recommendations as a follow-up to the initial assessment. This can be useful if further support is required from other services.
Further follow-up therapy sessions
If it is indicated, we will suggest a course of therapy, but we always work with you to agree the approach that will be most helpful. This may be individual or family therapy, strategy focused or explorative work.
Internal referral to autism and/or ADHD assessment services
(if appropriate).
In some cases, a psychology assessment is very useful in determining if another specialist assessment is needed – such as for autism or ADHD. If you present a complex picture, and are unsure how to proceed, a psychology assessment will generate a broad and holistic understanding. It will confirm if there is a rationale to offer a diagnostic assessment as well as any follow-up support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Anything you'd like to ask us?
Taking the first steps to understanding why you feel different, unhappy, or are struggling takes courage. We’re here to help you make sure you find the support that’s right for you.
How soon can I be seen?
Once we have received your referral form, we aim to offer you an initial assessment appointment within four to six weeks.
What's the difference between psychology and psychiatry?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in the assessment, psychiatric diagnosis and medical treatment of mental health conditions. A clinical psychologist works from a non-medical model and seeks to understand individuals in the context of their own life. They develop a formulation, or ‘shared understanding’ designed to help the individual and their family see why an issue might have developed, what triggers it and what stops it from going away. Their main type of treatment is talking therapy, and they can draw from a range of options to provide a tailored approach. It takes about the same amount of time to train as either a psychiatrist or psychologist. If you don't know which one you need, we would be happy to help you decide.
What therapeutic interventions do you offer?
Our team of psychologists are able to offer a range of different therapeutic interventions. When we receive your referral, we will allocate you a clinician based on your clinical requirements so you can get the most out of your therapy. We can provide the following interventions within our adult mental wellbeing service:
How often will I see my therapist?
Most often, sessions are organised weekly, but after a while can be arranged fortnightly or monthly. Once progress is made, they may even be scheduled as required.
Do you have access to a psychiatrist?
We do not provide a psychiatry service at Psicon. However, we do have access to skilled consultant psychiatrists who we can recommend. We can support a referral to them if this feels appropriate for you.
